Mechanism of Action

Buprofezin is a thiadiazinane insect growth regulator and belongs to insect molting inhibitors. It inhibits insect chitin synthesis and interferes with metabolism, preventing pests from molting and metamorphosing normally, leading to gradual death. It has contact and stomach toxic effects, does not kill adult insects, but can reduce oviposition and hinder egg hatching.
Action Characteristics:
  • High Selectivity: Mainly targets Homoptera pests (rice planthoppers, whiteflies, scale insects) and is safe to natural enemies

  • Slow Efficacy: Peak mortality occurs 3-7 days after application

  • Long-lasting Effect: Control period is 15 days, total effective period exceeds 30 days

Application Scope

Crops
Control Objects
Recommended Dosage
Rice
Planthoppers, leafhoppers
75~112.5 g/hm²

Toxicity and Safety

  • Toxicity Classification: Low Toxicity

  • To Humans and Livestock: Safe

  • To Natural Enemies: Safe to natural enemies such as ladybugs and lacewings, in line with the concept of IPM (Integrated Pest Management)

  • To Environment: Easily degradable, with microorganisms capable of degrading buprofezin

Market Situation

  • Major Manufacturers: Jiangsu Changlong Agrochemical (with 54% international market share), Hubei Dibo Chemical Industry, Wuhan Dingxintong Pharmaceutical, etc.

  • Global Status: China is a major producer and exporter of buprofezin technical

Precautions for Use

  1. Slow Efficacy: Application should be advanced 3-5 days earlier than conventional insecticides

  2. Target Specificity: Ineffective against Lepidoptera pests (e.g., Pieris rapae), do not blindly expand the scope of use

  3. Long Residual Period: Strictly observe the pre-harvest interval

Summary

Buprofezin TC is a highly effective, low-toxic, and highly selective insect growth regulator, especially suitable for controlling rice planthoppers, citrus scale insects, vegetable whiteflies and other pests. Its unique molting inhibition mechanism and ultra-long lasting effect make it play an important role in the IPM strategy, and it is an ideal alternative to some highly toxic pesticides.
